SUBJECT: DELPHI ENTERS PARTNERSHIP WITH PETROL SPECIALISTS

1. INTRODUCTION

With tightening emissions legislation, a growing global vehicle parc, and the need to offer customers a cost-effective way to service their vehicles, it is little wonder that the market for petrol injector testing and servicing is growing at a rapid rate.

The European petrol passenger car parc alone is now in excess of 150 million vehicles and this number is forecast to grow further in the coming years. This trend is echoed in all major markets across the globe.

Advancements in petrol technology are ensuring that engines are more efficient and can perform for longer at higher levels. The GDI (Gasoline Direct injection) engine is proof of this, and will reduce exhaust emissions, increase engine power and performance, and improve fuel economy. These advancements mean that petrol cars are working to finely-tuned performance levels, and the injectors within them will need servicing regularly to maintain this.

The tightening of emissions standards also means that the petrol engine needs to perform to ever-increasing specifications – Euro 5 standard for passenger cars will be introduced in September 2009. Injectors need to be tested and serviced at regular intervals to ensure that vehicles continue to meet these stringent emissions standards.

The key to the petrol car is the injectors. Regular testing and servicing of the injectors will ensure that the vehicle continues to perform to high levels, and will maintain economy and emissions-compliance.

Delphi is pleased to announce that we have teamed up with ASNU to offer a comprehensive test and service platform for modern petrol injectors.

Many of the opportunities and issues on petrol injectors mirror those on the diesel fuel injection system. Therefore Delphi’s experience and understanding on test and service requirements combined with ASNU’s knowledge and expertise on petrol injection gives the Delphi/ASNU partnership an unrivalled position in the market.

2. Petrol injector servicing

It is vital that injectors are tested as part of the diagnostic procedure on petrol vehicles, particularly when faced with combustion-related problems such as engine performance, fuel economy, excessive smoke and lambda or catalyst failures. Failure of other system components such as oxygen sensors, EGR valves, and spark plugs are, in many cases, only the symptom of the problem when in fact it is injector malfunctions that are the root cause. In these cases simply changing the sensors or plugs will not solve the problem and will lead to repeated issues with the vehicle.

Therefore it is imperative that garages have the equipment to carry out a quick and effective diagnostic check on the range of modern petrol injectors – this is exactly what the ASNU range provides.

3. The Asnu test programme

The ASNU programme gives the ability to carry out rapid, simple and comprehensive testing and servicing across a full range of petrol injectors. With ASNU equipment the mechanic can:

· Perform initial diagnostic test to identify faulty injectors

· Ultrasonically clean the complete injector

· Replace sealing rings, protection caps and filter baskets

· Re-test to ensure all injectors performing as a matched, balanced set

The programme has been designed with the user in mind with each step leading logically into the next and no unnecessary complications. The equipment is so easy-to-use that many technicians will be able to operate it by simply watching the training DVD and spending a couple of hours getting to know the machine. Of course, Delphi’s engineers will be on hand to offer technical support and training when required.

Diagnosis of the injectors on the ASNU equipment will clearly identify leaks and measure fuel distribution, atomisation, dynamic electronic operation, fuel delivery and flow rates. These tests are performed at various millisecond and rpm settings, thus giving a full analysis of injector performance.

The ASNU equipment will test petrol injectors of all technologies fitted by the major vehicle manufacturers. Amongst the injector types covered are K-Jetronic, Top-Feed, Side-Feed, Mono-Point, and GDI configurations.

The ASNU is suitable for testing all automotive, motorcycle and marine injectors, whether production or performance-orientated.

4. INCREASE TURNOVER & PROFITABILITY

The diagnostic and test capability given by the ASNU test stands provides the garage with the means to increase both turnover and profitability.

The price of petrol injectors has increased at a rapid rate over recent years, driven primarily by the advancements in fuel injection technology. For many vehicle owners, the cost of replacing faulty injectors with new is now prohibitive and therefore they will turn away from garages that cannot offer a service capability. By investing in an ASNU, a garage ensures that they can capture this growing service market.

Injector servicing also offers a more profitable solution to the garage than simply fitting new injectors. The diagnostic, cleaning and testing of one petrol injector will take approximately 30 minutes. Such is the profitability attached to the ASNU Classic that the machine will be paid for with the servicing of injectors from 100 vehicles. From that point onwards, all injectors that are serviced result in pure profit.

The ASNU is a diagnostic AND rectification tool. It therefore provides the dual benefit of high profit generation for the garage and a low-cost service solution for the vehicle owner.

5. THE ASNU CLASSIC

The ASNU Classic injector tester (ASNU01) is a premium product and is a market leader in its field. It gives the user full capability across a comprehensive range of product with key features including:

· Capability to test & service up to 8 injectors at one time

·

In-line flow tubes for easy delivery comparison

· Wide range of dynamic and static tests

· In-built ultrasonic cleaning system

The ASNU Classic is the right product for all garages serious about making money from petrol injector testing.

6. THE ASNU JUNIOR

The ASNU Junior is an entry-level petrol injector tester offering a lower-cost solution with limited capability compared to the Classic machine. The main differences are that the Junior does not have an in-built ultrasonic tank (although it can be purchased as a stand-alone extra) and it allows 6 injectors (as compared to 8 on the Classic) to be serviced at any one time.

The Junior is primarily targeted at garages specialising in motorcycles and marine engines

7. GDI Upgrade UNIT

Many modern petrol vehicles are fitted with Gasoline Direct Injectors (GDI). This injector technology was first introduced by Mitsubishi in 1997 and went into mass volume production in the early 2000’s through VW and Audi. Other manufacturers (Ford, Renault, Peugeot etc.) quickly switched to GDI technology and with the injectors being capable of meeting Euro 5 emissions legislation, rapid growth in the GDI vehicle parc will continue over the coming years.

Due to the design of GDI injectors they cannot be tested on traditional testers such as the ASNU Classic without an auxiliary upgrade box. The ASNU GDI Adapter Box has been designed to drive GDI injectors with an approved supply of current and voltage to simulate injector electronic operation as on the engine. Correct electronic operation is critical when examining the injector's response to changes in mS & RPM. Examination of the injector’s fuel distribution and atomisation is equally critical to the engine's correct running, performance, fuel economy and emission outputs. The upgrade box gives the capability to carry out all of this analysis on GDI injectors and has been designed to be compatible not only with current and previous versions of the ASNU Classic & ASNU Junior but also other petrol injector testers in the market. Therefore even if you already have a competitor’s product, the ASNU GDI upgrade box is an invaluable addition as it will increase your capability on petrol injectors.

8. SPARE PARTS & ACCESSORIES

Delphi will also be offering a wide range of spare parts and consumables to complement the ASNU test equipment. This range covers caps, o-rings and filter baskets for popular injectors in addition to replacement parts for the test machines. Full details of the range can be seen in the price details of this note.

9. VEHICLE ELECTRONICS PROGRAMME

The petrol injector diagnostic programme opens up opportunities on a wide range of associated product. Faults with oxygen sensors, EGR valves and ignition sensors & coils will all be identified during the diagnostic process.

Delphi offers range of over 600 part numbers within its vehicle electronic programme covering all of those parts mentioned above plus many more. Full details of this range can be found in the 2009 Vehicle Electronics catalogue, DDCX118.
